It’s Spring! Time to Declutter that Closet!

Have you heard of the book “ I Have Nothing to Wear!: A Painless 12-Step Program to Declutter Your Life So You Never Have to Say This Again!” by Jill Martin? It’s a nice read and had some really insightful tips to making sure you always have something to wear.

Just recently I also happened to catch an interview where the author Jill spoke about clearing out your closet in just two steps and here’s some of my favorite tips I took from both her book and interview that I’d like to share with you.

First things first, you have to admit you have a problem. Realizing that you have too much in your closet is the first step to decluttering. Consider removing all the things that may be taking up precious room or that’s causing you to be overwhelmed.

Here are a few examples:

  • Clothing that you haven’t worn in years.
  • Clothing from high school that  or any clothing you are holding onto because of sentimental value.
  • Clothing and accessories you bought just to lift your mood.
  • Clothing with tags still attached that you may not have even purchased this day, month or dare I say, year.

All of the above are things that are taking up room and need to go to make way for the clothing you will actually wear. Here’s a perfect example: If you have twenty favorite t-shirts from over five years ago, I would suggest keeping only a few and putting the shirts you do decide to keep in a keep sake box to free them of your closet.

This also goes for the changing of the seasons. If you have your winter coats mixed in with  your tank tops, now’s the time to remove the winter coats from  your closet, at least for another 6 months or so and store them in a different place- whether it be a coat closet or in air-tight containers.

So step one — purge your closet. Get all of the above out of your closet and from there you can store it elsewhere, donate it, sell it on consignment; you can be the judge of that.

Step two of this process is to then organize what you do have remaining in your closet. Speaking from experience during my college years, having your socks mixed with underwear that are mixed with belts next to mis-matched shoes just doesn’t work well.

Having a place for everything is beneficial when it comes to putting laundry away or better yet, keeping your clothing off the floor. Also it can greatly reduce the time it takes you to get ready in the morning, because you’ll know exactly where everything is.

So there you have it.  Only two steps and you are on your way to a clutter-free and manageable closet!

I highly recommend checking out I Have Nothing To Wear!: A Painless 12-Step Program to Declutter Your Life So You Never Have to Say This Again! You can purchase it for around $10 on Amazon by clicking the title above or click here to reserve your copy at the Cincinnati Library.

Now Trending: The Color Pistachio

As we head into spring over the next few months, the most popular colors for this season are hitting the racks and being seen in all the latest accessories. Without a doubt, it’s hard to go without spotting something in the color Pistachio. Perfect for the warmer months ahead, the color Pistachio is a light and pastel colored green. It’s been a popular color for bridesmaids dresses, home decor, wall colors and of course, clothing and accessories.

Below you can find nine “Pistachio” colored items to help you stay right on trend!

From Top moving Right:

I had to throw this print in there too. It’s handmade and super cute:

The Ugly Christmas Sweater Reinvented

I am always up for something fun and quirky, especially if it comes in the form of a t-shirt. So when I was asked if I’d be interested in an Ugly Christmas Sweater Tee, I couldn’t wait to get it in the mail.

It seems like every year I hear of more and more ugly Christmas sweater parties taking place. And with ‘ugly sweaters’ becoming popular once more, the supply probably isn’t going to meet the demand, that is unless you already own an itchy hot not-so- trendy sweater. I could never bring myself to it.

Luckily, there is a company that matches my sense of humor. Skip N’ Whistle has a variety of  ”Tacky Christmas Sweater” tee’s and sweatshirts in a variety of colors, for both men and women.

If you are just dying to have one, I’d take advantage of the offer taking place on Fab this weekend! But if you’d  rather wait and possibly get that hard-to-buy-for a fun gift for a change, you can always check out Skip N’ Whistle’s Etsy Shop.

What are Your Thoughts on Oxblood?

Pictured above from left to right:

I can’t really say I’m in favor the name Oxblood, but the color is indeed one of my favorites. It’s been named as the “it” color of this season as we see it appear more and more in clothing and accessories. This deeply saturated bluish-red color not only adds depth and richness to the seasons palette, but it pairs neatly with just about everything from large prints to tiny polka dots.

The key to wearing this gorgeous color is to not over-oxblood yourself. You know, don’t attempt to wear it head to toe, but instead, pick a few pieces in this classic color to compliment and update the current wardrobe you already own.

A few of my favorite oxblood pieces I’ve found are shown above. The Oxblood Blazer could be paired with a patterned or black top, medium wash jeans and neutral colored heels or boots while if you are thinking of sporting the oxblood colored pumps, I would keep the other colors you wear to a minimum.

So what do you think? Are you liking this color? I feel like I have been wearing Oxblood-colored nail polish for years!

3 Fun Beauty Finds…

Looking to try something new? Here are three fun beauty finds that you probably haven’t heard of…
Beauty Labels
Did you know that it’s not required for cosmetics to have an expiration date? While some cosmetics manufacturers help you determine the shelf life of your makeup with a little symbol (a pot) and number (usually in months) to indicate when it’s time to go, the problem with that method is that you have to actually remember when you cracked it open.
Well not anymore thanks to the waterproof durable stickers Beauty Alert! put on the market. With 20 stickers in all, these colorful reminders are also broken into subcategories of expiration dates, so you can easily label a specific product by its particular shelf life.
You can pick these labels up on the Beauty Alert Website for $4.95 which contains 20 labels in four distinct categories: 3, 6, 12 and 18+ months.
Glam Ears
It’s happened to us all at one time or another. Your hot hair tool accidentally slips or you hold it too close to your ear and before you know it, you are the proud owner of and unsightly burn.
That is where Glam Ears comes into play! Glam Ears are heat resistant silicon ear protectors that help protect your ears while styling our hair. You can purchase Glam Ears on their website, www.clevergirlinnovations.com, for $11.95.
The Paper Shower
When you just need to freshen up and soap and water aren’t available, that’s when The Paper Shower comes in handy! How are these any different than baby wipes?
They say the standard “wet wipe” currently on the market contains a very high alcohol content and are primarily designed to wipe your hands. Paper Shower, on the other hand, contains very little alcohol and is made to be used as a body wipe with its large size of 9″ x 12″.
You can purchase yours on the Paper Shower website, where a pack of 6 goes for $7.50 shipped.

5 Trends straight from NYFW…

Fashion Week in NYC has come to an end, but what we can take from over the hundreds of runway shows, are the fabulous trends!
Here are a few of the top trends I can definitely incorporate into my wardrobe that can also be translated into everyday wear. Hip Hip Hooray!
Prints Galore! This spring is all about an explosion of prints. You can find all sorts of prints: geometric, floral, pop art, busy, bright…. And wearing these prints head to toe is what it is all about!
Sleeves are making a comeback. Forget about bare arms this year! Bare arms have been replaced with cap sleeves, billowy sleeves, rounded sleeves, structured sleeves as well as long sleeves.
Prim and Proper. Thank you Kate Middleton- who is a fashion icon around the world. I am very excited about this trend and think we can all appreciate it. Think classic, romantic and very feminine while not bearing too much.
Color blocking. This seems to be a trend that is continuing on, as we saw a lot of color blocking this past fall and winter. What is great about color blocking is that you can use it to your advantage! Hide your least favorite parts of your body with darker colors, since dark colors have a slimming effect and let the lighter colors really accentuate your best features.
Hello Pleats! Pleats have become popular in every form. The  traditional pleated skirts have become more prevalent, but you may also be surprised to find pleats in just about every type of clothing in a variety of forms.
If you like the looks shown, make sure to click on the photo credits below to take you right to the product.

The Tangerine Tango Trend

I am absolutely in love with this color. I mean how could you NOT fall in love? It just screams happy and energetic and this year, the color seems to be unavoidable. From runway shows across the world to home decor, Tangerine Tango is the “it” color this spring…rather this year!

How-To: Style Necklaces

When putting on your jewels to complete your ensemble, do you ever get stumped? I mean how much jewelry is too much, right? Especially when it comes to necklaces. There are so many different styles, lengths, colors and textures.

You’ve got the subtle necklaces such as dainty little chains with small pendants to crazy over-the-top bib necklaces that have more beads and jewels on it than you could count in one day. Finding the right necklace to accentuate your look can sometimes be complicated!

So with that said, here are a few tips to help you find the perfect necklace that not only looks fabulous but fits your personal style:

Consider the type of neckline your top has:

  • Both long “Y” shaped necklaces and short necklaces look great with V neck tops.
  • Take in to account the depth of your shirt, too. I like to always have necklaces stop just above the neckline of a  shirt or at least a couple inches below so the necklace doesn’t get stuck in my shirt.
  • Scoop necklines look best with shorter necklaces.
  • Keep a simplistic neckline (sans the rouching or ruffles) if you plan on having your necklace as the focal point of your outfit.

Now that we have the necklines down, here are a few more tips on styling necklaces:

  • Go with a simple necklace if you are wearing a super busy or patterned top. Think a simple chain necklace with a small pendant.
  • If you are planning on wearing solid colors, wearing necklaces with multiple layers and colors could really brighten up what would be a rather dull outfit.
  • Layering necklaces is another option that really can make your look dazzle.
  • Another trend going on now is wearing mixed metals. Think bright silver with antiqued gold.
  • Make a statement by wearing a statement necklace and use it as the focal point of your look.
  • Sometimes plain old trial and error is the best way to decide what you feel comfortable wearing.

Just make sure you don’t try and pull off something crazy like this…unless you like that kind of thing!

New Year, New You..So what about Fashion Resolutions?

When we think of New Years resolutions, I bet a lot of us don’t think about fashion resolutions. As mentioned in yesterdays post, the most popular resolutions have to do with weight loss, quitting smoking and eating right. While those are great resolutions, what about considering taking on some fashion resolutions? After all, the new year is about starting fresh and what better way to do just that then to work on your wardrobe, style and image?

With that said, here are just a few ideas to get you on the right stylish track for 2012!

Work on Simplifying your Closet

Do you have stacks of clothing on the floor, shoes jumbled in an unorganized heap or summer clothes still hanging up?  January is the perfect month to go through your closet and really organize it.

A few things you can do is get rid of anything that no longer fits or that you haven’t worn in the past year. If you haven’t worn something in a year, chances are slim that you’ll be sporting that piece anytime in the near future.

Another great thing I did over the holidays was to put all like items together. All my cardigans are hanging neatly together, all dresses are pushed towards the back of the closet (since it is a bit to cold to wear most of the dresses I have). All my slacks are neatly folded and put in one area then all my jeans are in another area, neatly stacked as well. (And…I finally parted with my maternity jeans! To be honest, I have no idea why I was so set on keeping them around, they didn’t even fit.)

Anyway, you can read more about de-cluttering your closet here.

Create a Signature Style for Yourself

Creating a signature style for yourself doesn’t have to be a complete wardrobe makeover, it can be as small as just defining yourself through your accessories. To discover your own personal style, think about what you really like to wear. What pieces are you drawn too? Are you attracted to bright colors? Do you just love wearing dresses? Whatever it is that you think may make up your personal style, go with it!

If you want to read more about developing your own personal style, here are a few articles I wrote in the past:

Give yourself a Stylish Challenge this Year

This resolution can be interpreted in many different ways so here are a few ideas to give yourself a little challenge:

  • Stuck wearing one color all the time? Next time you’re in the market for new clothes, go out on a limb and purchase a few pieces in colors you wouldn’t typically wear. You might like the change.
  • If you wear flip flops half of the year, try trading them out for nicer quality sandals.
  • Try wearing different accessories such as hats to dress up an outfit.

Lastly, Invest in Quality

Every once in awhile, it is okay to splurge on something that you really need. There is nothing better than a nice new winter coat that you know you will get your use out of. Quality pieces can also be an incentive to keep up with your New Year’s resolutions.

To learn more about sticking to you resolutions and rewarding yourself at milestones, this is the perfect blog post to read.
